Lesson 8 Review: Unity, Coherence and Cohesion

In Lesson 8, we talked about Unity, Coherence, and Cohesion.  Remember these tips:

Academic essay paragraphs are usually 5 to 7 sentences long.

Unity is defined as the state of being united or joined as a whole” (http://oxforddictionaries.com, 2012)
Coherence:The sentences should be organized in a logical manner and should follow a definite plan of development.
“Coherence can be improved by strengthening the ties between old information and new.”

Cohesion is the grammatical and lexical relationship within a text or sentence. Cohesion can be defined as the links that hold a text together and give it meaning.

What is a topic sentence?

A topic sentence is the direct statement of the main idea.
Note that in every single paragraph, there should be only one single main idea.
If there is more than one idea, devote the other ideas into other paragraphs.
